Articulating the Value Proposition of a Blog

Monday, April 12th, 2004

What is a Blog? A journal? A commentary? a photo album? A community convergence tool? A verticle marketer? A PR Tool?

The answers communicated so far have been a resounding YES to all of the above and more…. but each identifier to a lesser or greater degree dependant on what anyone's particular Blog means to him or her. How do you grasp and leverage this multi faceted liquid state of a label from a retail sales perspective?

A Blog allows a company / individual to easily create, update, and personalize their web presence while adding life to their communication. Nothing is more enticing than commentary with a personal touch, which Corporate or even personal websites most of the time lack. Personality can be addictive, and adding the right flavor to your brand could triple your repeat  impression rate from your clients if positioned correctly.

A Blog is one of the most flexible multi directional Internet communications mediums available to the more business oriented or non-technical user in the market today. Anyone, anywhere, with even limited surfing experience can create, customize, and update their own web communications with the least amount of know how and effort required . The product’s great success in the “Geek” market shows that this tool has applications beyond the basic user, and the features that can be turned on or off on a client by client basis through our system allows our resellers the ability to custom tailor their offerings (and Price) to a particular client’s needs without any extra wholesale level expenditure due to the Blogware bandwidth / storage only pricing model.

Package up all of the little intricacies a small business, one-man operation, or Joe citizen may need to publicize online and what you will end up with is a Blog.

Now…. what is the market (who will buy one?) and what marketing approaches / packages should you offer? How do you compete against the no-frills freebie offerings?

Answering these questions is the reason why I have been re-tasked in my efforts here with the herd. Number one is to find out this valuable info and centralize the findings, and number two is to communicate these revelations effectively to all those willing to listen in our channel. As the new Business Development Manager for the Blogware product at Tucows I will be interviewing clients, prodding the marketplace to find the best way to position the Value Proposition, and to ensure that the continued development of the service follows a course as required by our clients, the retail partners that will be charging the marketplace with the only truly outsourced wholesale Blog service in the market today.

I will be positing my findings as I delve ever deeper into the Blog market from retail to wholesale, features to price. Your comments and communication will become an integral part of what shape this service has in the future, so please comment a lot, and if you think I am full of it, tell me! I am still learning about this untapped infant of a market, and that is what a Blog is meant for anyways :)

What’s in store for the next post? Application… specifically what are the most common and promising applications of this service evolving in the marketplace today, and what new applications could be in store tomorrow?

Stay tuned, an excited sales guy can be one of the most entertaining (and annoying) spectacles you have ever witnessed ;) Let the fireworks begin!
